I recently sent an email to my superintendent, whose major focus right now is technology. Here is what it said, "Okay, I am just going to say it. Hope you don't mind. Why is it that we are all so concerned about technology and surveying all our stakeholders about this, but we are not so interested in everyone's thoughts about reading? Wouldn't it be great if our district could be as focused on getting kids great books, our kids spending time reading in class without disruption from AR, partnering with the public library to come to each school to put a library card and a book in every kids' hand, reestablishing Reading is Fundamental, having an inservice from Donalyn Miller (the Book Whisperer), and other ways to make reading our focus? I think we have lost touch with our humanity. This makes me sad.
http://bookwhisperer.com/
Her response was, "Sounds like it is time for us to have lunch again." Well, it is a start.
